How Roof Ventilation Works

Hot air rises, which is why an attic is typically the hottest part of a home. Roof ventilation gives that hot, moist air somewhere to go instead of building up under the roof deck. A properly ventilated attic works on a simple principle: intake vents, usually at the soffit or eave, pull in cooler outside air, while exhaust vents, usually at the ridge or gable, let hot air escape. When intake and exhaust are balanced, air moves continuously through the attic instead of stagnating.

Why Poor Ventilation Costs You Money

An attic without enough airflow traps heat, which pushes attic temperatures well above outdoor temperatures in North Texas summers. That heat radiates into the living space below, forcing the HVAC system to work harder and raising cooling bills. Trapped moisture is the other half of the problem: without proper airflow, humid air condenses inside the attic, which can damage wood framing and insulation and create conditions for mold growth. A humid, poorly sealed attic can also attract vermin, including rats, squirrels, and birds, which look for gaps at the eaves to get inside.

Ridge vents run along the peak of the roof and provide continuous exhaust ventilation across the entire ridge line, making them one of the most efficient exhaust options.

Soffit and eave vents provide intake airflow along the underside of the roof overhang, pulling in cooler outside air to balance a ridge or gable exhaust vent.

Low-profile static vents are individual exhaust vents installed directly on the roof deck, useful on roofs where a continuous ridge vent isn't practical.

Attic power fans actively pull hot air out of the attic using an electric or solar-powered motor, useful for attics with insufficient passive airflow.

Solar vents function like power fans but run on solar power rather than the home's electrical system.

Bathroom exhaust fans vent moisture from showers directly outside rather than into the attic space, preventing a separate source of attic humidity.
